Primero, asegurémonos que sabemos qué es una galaxia: es una agrupación de estrellas, polvo y gas. Pero, ¿de cuántas estrellas estamos hablando? Si nos quedamos en nuestra Vía Láctea, resulta que hay más de doscientos mil millones de estrellas, 200 000 000 000, y una de ellas es nuestro querido Sol.
Si ya nos parece que esta cifra es de vértigo, vayamos ahora a la pregunta del título: ¿Cuántas galaxias hay en el universo? ¡Más de cien mil millones de galaxias!

Lo curioso es que hasta 1920, en el Gran Debate “La escala del universo”, se seguía discutiendo si todo el universo estaba formado por una sola galaxia, la nuestra (la Vía Láctea), como defendía Shapley, o si podían existir más galaxias, como apoyaba Curtis.
Uno de los problemas que había detrás de esta conclusión errónea era que “simplemente” no se sabía medir bien grandes distancias. Y realmente no es nada fácil. El ingenio y la tecnología han sido los grandes aliados para resolver este problema (y muchos otros).
Os dejo pensando, asombrados ante lo pequeños que somos, o lo grande que es el universo, observando esta imagen, real, captada por el telescopio espacial Hubble, que, gracias a la colaboración de la NASA y la Agencia Espacial Europea, orbita la Tierra desde 1990 a unos 600 km de altitud, lo que le permite observar el “cielo profundo” sin la distorsión que supone mirar a través de nuestra atmósfera.
